As a Veteran, you have many options when the time comes where in home care by a dedicated caregiver becomes your best option for aging in place.  Assistance can be as simple as having a companion come by to take care of basic activities of daily living (ADL) to having a nurse perform a more extensive program of care.

  • Dial a Nurse is certified and approved by the Veteran’s Administration to assist you with these services under the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care Program:
  • Personal care
  • Respite care
  • Transferring to and from bed
  • Assistance with bathing
  • Assistance with dressing
  • Medication reminders
  • Meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping and Laundry
  • Companionship

IMPORTANT: You often have the ability to choose which certified In Home Health Care agency you prefer to use.  Let your VA Care manager know you have a specific care provider in mind!

According to the VA the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care Program :
is also an option for veterans who are isolated or whose caregiver is experiencing burden, cannot physically perform all the needed tasks or needs an occasional respite.

In addition to the above program, the VA also offers a Respite Care benefit.  This can be a life saver for Veterans who have family members or friends who act as caregivers, but need a break from the heavy responsibilities of daily care.   Whether the caregivers need a short break to travel or just a period of rest the VA can help. Dial a Nurse has years of experience in working with Veterans who need this type of caregiving.  Talk to your Doctor or your VA representative and let them know you or your caregiver needs a break.

Sometimes the benefits offered by the VA aren’t enough to pay all of your home care related bills.  That’s why they have a special program called “Aid and Attendance”. If you served at least 90 days on Active Duty or at least one day during wartime and received an honorable discharge, you or your surviving spouse are eligible for this program if:

You have a non-service connected medical condition that causes you to need help with activities of daily living and You have a net worth of less than $127,061 not including your primary residence and auto Applications for the Aid and Assistance program can take awhile to process.  However, once approved, all benefits are backdated to the day you file so you will be reimbursed for  all the care you receive during the waiting period.
